Erichsen Model 428 Paint Film Coating Scratch Tester -- Product Introduction:
The Erichsen Model 428 Scratch Tester's blade is made of tungsten carbide, suitable for performing scratch tests on coating corrosion test samples. The Model 428 Scratch Pen is a portable and versatile tool primarily used to create precise incisions on coating surfaces in preparation for corrosion testing (such as salt spray, continuous or intermittent immersion, accelerated aging, gas corrosion, and humidity tests).
Erichsen Model 428 Paint Film Coating Scratch Tester -- Applications and Testing Principle:
The Erichsen Model 428 Scratch Tester consists of a wedge-shaped test head compliant with Clemen standards and a plastic handle. The test head tip has a diameter of 0.5mm or 1.0mm; it is mainly used to scratch the coating of samples before salt spray testing. Depending on different standards, different blades are used. The German ERICHSEN Coating Scratch Tester Model 428 offers three types of test heads (four specifications) to create specific damages by breaking through the coating on the sample surface. Subsequent tests under standard conditions evaluate the coating's corrosion resistance.
Before starting corrosion tests, scratches need to be made on the sample surface. The scratch pen, at a steady speed (generally recommended at 10cm/s) and under certain pressure, breaks through the coating, leaving a clear scratch on the sample surface. Other tests are then conducted to study the corrosion process.
The Erichsen Model 428 Scratch Tester is used to create specific damages on coated samples intended for corrosion testing. Corrosion tests can be performed using salt spray test equipment compliant with DIN 50 021 standards, and can be used in conjunction with Erichsen Models #606 and #608 for this purpose.
This method provides an evaluation standard for the impact of corrosion beneath the coating and its effect on adhesion. The lateral damage length under the coating serves as an indicator of anti-corrosion protection.
Erichsen Model 428 Paint Film Coating Scratch Tester -- Design and Function:
The Erichsen Model 428 Scratch Tester is guided by a fixed bracket and handle. In the standard model: a 0.5mm wide cutting blade uses a 0.5mm test head, while a 1.0mm wide cutting blade uses a 1.0mm test head. Additionally, there are arc-angle scraping test heads and cross-cut blade test heads available for testing options. A locking screw allows horizontal adjustment by raising or lowering the cutting blade.
Erichsen Model 428 Paint Film Coating Scratch Tester -- Test Execution:
Depending on the test standard requirements, the following ordering information is provided:
0539.01.32 van Laar scraping test head, diameter 0.5 mm or 1.0mm
0564.01.32 Cross-cut blade head
0218.02.32 Clemen test head (angle 30°)
Prepare the test panel by making one or more straight scratches on the entire metal plate, parallel to the narrow edge of the panel and penetrating to the substrate. In some cases, the St Andrews Cross scratch method may be used.
